Easy Cleanup Sparkles
We’ve moved on from pine cones painted in Thanksgiving inspired fall colors to pine cones painted pink. Shiny, sparkly pink. Not one to squelch budding creativity, I mixed up some washable glue with paint, and the shiny part was accomplished.
But the sparkles? We have managed to go three and a half years without bringing glitter into the house. Chris has a slight glitter phobia (”It gets everywhere! You can never get it all off!”) that was cute and quirky in our early years together, but has become entirely impractical with an aspiring fairy princess daughter. Every other craft supply imaginable has been provided in abundance, but glitter has been quietly left out.
Holding my breath, I offered a bowl of kosher salt with a dash of pink sugar crystals mixed in. The verdict? Water soluble, and three year old approved. Maybe sheltering from the outside world is an okay pro to add to the homeschooling decision making list after all.

I LOVE IT!!! But unfortunately, we already have glitter, glitter glue, and glitter paint.
We made your turkeys today- tweaked a little to what we had on hand. Thanks for the great idea.
I was wondering what ever happened of that phobia as E grew and became “girly”. We already have pretty gold glitter all over the house from our Halloween activity a few weeks ago. Thankfully that doesn’t make daddy shudder. Packing peanuts – now that’s another thing
I found glitter markers the other day for Helen. They’re great! Not messy like glitter and dry a lot faster than glitter glue.
SMART!
I have a friend who calls glitter the herpes of the crafting world because, “Once you get it you can never get rid of it, and you give it to everyone you touch.”
My husband shares the phobia…and I agree! Great idea!
That is a very creative idea. I like it

… sometimes on a shelf, in a book, in your cup of tea, on your husband’s face (just don’t say anything, it will probably fall off before he notices anyway)…
As for glitter, though it does get everywhere, it isn’t so bad … you’ll be surprised every now and then by a little sparkle here and there
I plan to try your sparkles though; in our houseful of girls, one can never have to much sparkle!
Blessings,
Catherine
Why oh why didn’t I know about this yesterday??? I did glitter for the first time yesterday with my 3-year-old and my 2 2-year-olds and vowed I’d never do it again! (Pictures are on my blog.) Thanks for the great idea!
What a lovely idea. I have been wondering hoe to green up the glitter. Thanks for sharing!
Yes, I have every art supply created except for glitter too! We’ve used kosher salt before too, it does sparkle. I want to try epsom salts and watercolor too, that’s supposed to grow crystals when it dries.
what a great idea. i had to share that when a friend of mine gave birth to her second daughter, there was a piece of glitter on the top of her newborn baby head…it truly does get *everywhere*!
We’ve used sotre bought glitter once for homemade magic fairy wings. What a mess! I’m looking forward to this great substitute.
Thanks for sharing!
[...] love this hack for cutting down on the glitter mess (@ Learning [...]
Holy smokes, is this ever a brilliant idea! I share your husband’s glitter phobia, and this may just save my sanity!
My daughter is not quite to the age where we’re getting into glitter yet, but I’m tucking this away for when we do! I linked to this on my weekly roundup, the post is under my name. Thanks for sharing!
